Say No To EVERY Form of Hormonal Birth Control

From the time I was old enough to know what hormonal birth control was (in my younger days only the “pill” was available. Now hormonal birth control is invading females’ bodies in many forms.) I always had this gut feeling: “there is just something wrong with hormones being used to tamper with female’s bodies. This is not normal, natural, and cannot be good for the body in any way, shape, or form.”

For years I worked in OB/GYN nursing watching hormonal birth control pills getting shoved down the throats of teens, sometimes as soon as they started their periods. BC pills were prescribed to young teen girls for various reasons:

  • to regulate the cycle (what teen, just starting to have periods, has a regular cycle. menstruation doesn’t just start one day and immediately it’s the perfect 28 day cycle anymore than a woman goes through menopause having perfect 28 day cycles and then they just stop. Ok, we are finished now.)
  • for acne (seriously people… teach the kid how to eat whole foods as nature intended)
  • to control bleeding (again… change eating & lifestyle habits)
  • to control headaches

I phased into teaching junior & senior high health ed classes in public school, private schools, colleges, and community based non-profits. Over 20+ years, the percentage of young girls I saw who were on the pill* rose steadily. The beginning age that many girls are put on hormonal birth control kept dropping.

Hormonal birth control is an area where much education is needed. Moms, in desperation to help their daughters, listen to the medical explanation about how helpful hormonal birth control is for their daughter’s “menstrual” issues. Mothers and daughters are told how it is actually healthier for the daughters to be on the pill than not on the pill.

I can see how this early prescription for hormonal BC happens.   Mothers just wants what is seemingly best for her daughter.  The doctor does know best… correct?

When I was a teen, there was a deep space of common sense inside me that made me realize there was nothing good or natural about hormonal birth control. Three plus decades later, we know the horrible side and long-term effects that women have experienced with menopausal hormone replacement therapies. We are now starting to learn the horrors of hormonal birth control.

As a Natural & Functional Medicine Health Educator, I work with clients one on one. I have seen the ravages of hormonal birth control on womens’ lives.

Sarsaparilla Root: a healthy liver breaks down hormones to be excreted through the colon. Sarsaparilla root helps to keep the liver healthy and doing its job of detoxing and breaking down hormones. Dandelion root, burdock root, and milk thistle seeds are other liver nourishing herbs to assist in healthy liver menopausal magic. (Shhhh, I did not make this tincture!)

Flooding periods leaving a mess in your life (and clothes? Not to mention car seat, bed…) Wild Yam to the rescue! Years ago I used wild yam for birth control but that is another topic.   ; )     I came home to wild yam after I had my first, and only I might add, flooding period. I take 3 of these capsules every AM & every PM. No floods ever again for me. I suspect Wild Yam also nourishes my body cells to create a peaceful & magical menopausal transition for me (along with my whole food & living habits.)  So many women suffer from flooding and are told to get ablation (I would never, ever, recommend this procedure to anyone… find the root cause of your struggles and heal them!) and/or a hysterectomy (another procedure I would not recommend save for the very extreme reasons). Wild Yam also helps to keep our bones strong well into our Medicine Woman / Crone Wisdom Years! OK, another HUGE issue with the menopausal years in what the medical field calls vaginal atrophy. Let me just say, creating such negative terms around the female body is just wrong. It keeps us in the mentality that there is something wrong with our bodies, that our feminine organs are innately weak and malfunctioning. This my friends is pure and unadulterated bullshit. We are strong; we have powerful and wise feminine organs!

No, we can’t be silly, aging happens.

A while back in my Wise Woman blogging career, I wrote a post on Voluptuous Vagina’s.  At that point, I had been making a vaginal cream / ointment for a couple of years. I had friends and clients who complained of the vaginal dryness and issues that accompany aging in our amazing female bodies. Weaving My Way Into Menopause

Everywhere I look there are posts and article enticing me to take back my sexy, regain my libido, bring back the magic even in the midst of my moving into my menopausal years. I giggle at this constant urging to maintain the juiciness of my 20’s, 30’s, hell even my 40’s.

What if I don’t want to?!?!   wink

I think of my grandmothers at 52 (OK, I am almost 52). My Grams were not sporting around in lycra enhanced-legging style jeans, high heels, and low cut tops showing off cleavage (and one of my Grams had quite the cleavage to show off had she been so inclined).       They were being wise women, Grammas, women in the fall and winter seasons of their lives, crones with a twinkle! No pressure to have perky breasts and saunter out into the world looking and acting sexy.

I am not saying I am getting old. Hell, not even close my friends! I have many decades to indulge in the the pleasures and challenges of life:

  • yoga
  • mountain climbing
  • my kids & pets
  • hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming about the ADK Mountains
  • hell, swimming in my backyard woods
  • diving deeper into my healer skills
  • hanging with my partner
  • music
  • friends
  • good food
  • gardening
  • making my community a better place for all
  • fun, fun, fun   (and not necessarily in this order)

As humans we only have a certain amount of energy to expend in a day’s time or over a lifetime. Some of us are more energetic than others… never the less, there is a finite amount of energy. When we no longer ovulate, creating that hormonal drive to procreate and pursue the best sperm donor (the innate drive to have sex!), our energies shift elsewhere. We focus on other things. This is a natural phenomena.

When a female dog (or any mammal) no longer ovulates and “goes into heat” said dog is not out looking for a hot male to stand for. Have a dog spayed, surgical menopause, and the lack of interest in standing for a male is immediate. No one expects that female dog to keep strutting her stuff.

I am told, when one moves through the initial years of menopausal happenings and a lack of desire (most of the time) that this desire thing returns. Returns in a different way… not the hormonal driven desire but as a gentler sort of desire. Hmm, thoughts ladies? If only we still lived in community sharing our wisdom from generation to generation…

Thoughts are always welcome, in fact, encouraged!

Lagging Libido Part 2

A few months back (where does the time go?), I wrote a blog post on lagging libido and how our reproductive tracts are like the canary in the coal mine. When things are out of whack… pay attention as something is amiss in your body.

Things to consider if your Libido’s Luster has Left the Lime Light:

  1. Is it your age? As we age, our levels of female hormones drop. Hormones are what send us looking for that male balance in our life, mating, sex! Think about female dogs and other mammals: do they go looking for mating experiences when they are not in heat? No way. Same goes for your body: hormones dropping off with age, poor nutrition, and health issues means the physical – biologically driven urge for sex may just not be there. Now is the time to use your mind to want (or not) sexual encounters for the closeness and intimacy it brings.   2. Thyroid: is your thyroid suffering from poor diet, lack of iodine and other key minerals, lack of good self-care?
  3. Adrenal gland: is it suffering from too much stress, too much coffee & sugar, and not enough sleep / real food / and relaxation (think yoga!)?

All of these beautiful glands work in symphony with each other. One gland out of whack and the other glands suffer as well.

When our glandular health is out of balance, our bodies will actually borrow (more like steal!) the pre-cursor hormones for your reproductive tract. These pre-cursor hormones are used to make other hormones in your body because you are stressed, out of balance. You can survive not having a menstrual cycle or producing offspring but you cannot survive without your thyroid or adrenal.

When our health begins to suffer our libido is like the check engine light on our car’s dashboard: a warning to take notice, do something, make changes that invite health & healing into our life.

So many factors can affect our libido as lifestyle impacts on our reproductive tracts take a heavy toll. Our reproductive tracts are like the canary in the coal mine: when life supporting oxygen is not available the reproductive tract falls ill (the canary dies).

Menopausal Mind… Forever Young

I recall during pregnancy having lapses of memory that were blamed upon the Mommy Mind and the hormones of pregnancy. Here I am at 50 and I am wondering about my menopausal mind. I was keeping track of 2 weeks time to remember to stop and say goodbye to a friend who leaves for the winter. The day I planned to stop and hug her goodbye I find I am 1 week late. How DID I lose track of a whole week?

I asked my dear male partner in rhetorical humor:

“Why can’t I go back to 20?”

To which he replied with his hand over my heart:

“You are always 20 in your heart.”

Funny, but not in my head!

I would take memory herbs… IF I could remember to take them. Seriously, I am not that bad, just sad about not saying goodbye.

So I remind myself of the beauty of the Menopausal Years:

At menarche a woman enters her power, 
                      Through menstruation she practices her power,

Later that day, while driving to pick up my kids at school, I am blessed by this song on the radio: (I am pretty certain the universe was telling me all will be OK.)
