Why You Should Use Organic Menstrual Care Products

vulva

Females: Know what you are putting in and on your body. The mucous membranes of the vaginal area are very sensitive and blood rich tissue. This means the blood circulation in this area pulls toxins into your blood stream easily.

Consider using organically grown cotton made pads and tampons, organic cotton reusable pads, sea sponge tampons, moon cup /menstrual cups. I will post sites to learn and possibly purchase from below.

I LOVE my Luna Pad, organic, no dye, reusable pads. It is so easy to remove the top layer liner pad and replace it before you soak through. Which you won’t soak through with Luna pads as they have a soak proof barrier!

Honoring the Female Within

maid mom wild wise

Maiden                Maid-Mother           Enchantress           Wise Woman

Women go through phases of our female selves every month during the course of our moon cycle. The 10 lunar months of pregnancy go through the same Maiden (Spring), Maid (Summer), Enchantress (Autumn), and Wise Woman (Winter) energies. Females go through these phases on a larger scale as we live through our entire bleeding – menstrual years. On an even bigger scale, we women go through these phases from our birth to our death. Autumn has to be the notorious 40s!

At 19 years of age, as a nursing student, I observed my first birth.

vaginal delivery

I was fascinated and in total awe of the whole process. When I began to think about it further, what brought this birthing moment to us, I was even more amazed at the miracle and magic that is brought forth by a female’s body. I am still amazed that a half cell, egg, can be fertilized by another half cell, sperm, and create a whole new human being. One cell goes on to form an entire embryo (each and every one of the different organ systems!), placenta, umbilical cord, amniotic sac, and amniotic fluid. That is one very busy little cell!

       The Magical, Creative Uterus

The Magical, Creative Uterus

Sometimes that one cell does all of that busy work twice (identical twins) and even more rarely to form identical quadruplets or more!

This entire process has captivated me from that day in the birthing room when I was 19 years old. I never cease to be amazed at woman’s, human’s, creative capacity.

Over the course of a female’s lifetime she walks the earth as a maiden, a maid-mother, the wild woman enchantress, and finally the wise woman elder.

At menarche a woman enters her power,
Through menstruation she practices her power,
At menopause she becomes her power.

Transforming the “Curse” to Menstrual Magic!

PS  This is a pre-script, not post script! For all women who have finished the Moon Cycle part of your life and moved into the Wise Woman phase of your being… read on anyhow, please do not dismiss because you no longer bleed. Your body still follows the monthly rhythm of the moon and your hormonal cycle. The whole process is now gentler and not so obvious to follow. We, all women, can benefit from embracing our feminine being as a positive, natural experience.
 uterus divine    sacred womb canstock
I have always found the words, energy, and attitude* most often used around menstruation to be confusing and frustrating.  When I was younger, I could not put a finger on it; my feelings that this negativity was just wrong. I found it very disconcerting that women held such negative attitudes around a process that seemed a natural part of who we are as women. Menstruation, to me, was something that happened every month, why not embrace it?
*The Curse, on the Rag, it is that time of the month (eyes rolling), women’s troubles, Sally (this term means weakling), wounded clam, ragtime, Dracula’s tea bag, big red, bleedies, blobbing… the list of mostly derogatory terms literally goes on and on.  My favorite has always been “Moon Time” as used by the Native Americans. I used to wonder, as a teen, why all women did not embrace this phrase.
I still am taken aback, gently but aback none the less, when I hear women speak of menstruation (and, really, all feminine processes: pregnancy, birthing, breastfeeding, menopause) in negative terms. These natural processes are dreaded, and almost despised in some cases, when to me it seems that they should be embraced and valued.
As a woman, I urge you to embrace the beauty of your feminine cycle. As an RN, with years of Maternity and OB/GYN nursing experience, I urge you to embrace your cycle from a holistic perspective. Why? Because when you do create a positive attitude and energy around the beauty of your ability to create (you can chose to create or not), your experience of the process(es) shifts to a much healthier and happier space. You will also take on responsibility for your experience and how you co-exist with your feminine cycle.
Over the years, working in maternity nursing, I watched as women’s bodies were mistreated by the medical profession:
  • the pill to deal with all menstrual issues, menstrual ills
  • ablation to “end” menstrual difficulties, once and for all
  • C-Sections for the convenience of the medical staff
  • Birthing viewed as a disease process
  • Hysterectomy, done at the drop of a hat, instead of keeping a women’s reproductive tract intact.

When we invoke self-responsibility around our daily health, in all aspects of our life and our menstrual well-being, we invite powerful life balancing and healing energy into our being.

The below books are amazing guides to support you along your path of finding Menstrual Magic, Period Power, in your life.  I urge you to read one, read them all, and learn about the natural cycle of energy, (the seasons of your cycle), that is/are an intricate part of your monthly, moon cycle and feminine being.

They Are Here!!

The Glad Rags package of reusable menstrual pads, I ordered, arrived yesterday!  On my Birthing Day for Jake.  Sweet ‘lil Birthing Day gift for Momma!

I am so excited for my next period which is 3 weeks away. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas!

The pads are so soft. I am now lamenting not making this switch YEARS ago.  I have had a period for 37 years! This is many years I could have used the soft, cottony, earth-friendly pads. Glad Rags started in 1993, I was 28. 21 years I have missed out on this organic, cottony softness!

I am wondering, at 49, how many years I will get out of these things

AND

What is one to do with their cotton, re-usable pads when menopause is my life? Sell used menstrual pads? To whom? Is there a market for used Glad Rags?  Let me check Ebay… I will be right back.

OK, lots of them for sale on Ebay but no “used” ones. Hmm, reminds me of the days, years ago, when 3 girlfriends (Myself included here) passed around our different menstrual cups. We wanted to check them all out and see which one we like the best: The Keeper, Moon Cup, La Luna Cup, Diva Cup, etc.

So, before you get totally grossed out, we cleaned with hot, soapy water and then soaked them in a vinegar and water solution infused with lavender and tea tree oil.  All clean and free of bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. before we used each others.

I was, still am, a Keeper fan!

Stay tuned to learn more about my thoughts on these sweet, soft pads AND embracing menstruation for the magical, creative force it is!

Happy Birthing Day to ME!

As Mothers, Parents, we take the time to celebrate our Kid’s birthdays. This is a time to make them feel special, wanted in this world, and feel our own gratefulness for their presence in our lives.

My first son was born on July 29th. He made me a Mom (We, as women, are all Mothers with the ability to always Mother others, Mother all beings!).

mom and jake Snuggling my Jake!

I urge all Moms to celebrate each and every one of your Kid’s birthdays as your special day as well.  These are the days you birthed your babes; brought forth your creations into this world.

The birthday, birthing day, is a time of joy, a time to celebrate:

  • the divine process of fertilization and pregnancy (Hey, the divine menstrual cycle that brings forth our ability to create!),
  • the actual labor and birthing process, the whole bittersweet process,
  • the years of being a Mom and all that entails…,
  • your growth as a human being and the wisdom you have called home to your own being (It is so easy to “say” how we would be as a Mom, a Parent, and how Kids “should” be raised. This is a whole other experience when we are right in the heat of it all. Nothing like doing it to create our own wisdom! Being a mom has taught me to never give advice about something I have never actually done!),
  • the beautiful souls, your children, who walk this plane of existence with you; they have so much to teach us if we only pay attention and listen instead of thinking we, as parents, have all the answers,
  • the wisdom we become as we walk through life as Mom, with our Mother’s grace,
  • and gratitude for all our mom’s gave to us and taught us along their mothering path (even when we hear our mother coming out in our own words to our kids!).

Every year when my boy’s birthdays roll around, I show gratitude for their place by my side and all they have taught me about being me!

Jake, Eli, and Mom, 12 years ago… where does the time go?

jake's 15th

A few months back, I made an “oreo” cookie cake for Eli, my 12 year old’s birthday.  I reported about it in my blog post:  My Holistic Momma’s Dilemma. I used the Newman-Os as you see above. This cake was a big hit with my kids and is being repeated here, 3 months later, for Jake’s 15th.

Happy 15th Birthday Jake and Happy Birthing Day to Me!

Love,

MOM
